Swearing At Motorists started as a four-track recording project in the mid-1990s in the basement of The Rock ’n’ Roll Bed & Breakfast in Dayton, Ohio. Creating music was still very new to my musical partner Dave Doughman in those days but he was extremely prolific. Looking back, I am amazed and extremely proud of how much we accomplished during those heady days of the mid-to-late ’90s.
Of course, not everything we recorded was released, including this archival project, “If Birds Were Spies.” The EP was originally slated for cassette release on Indianapolis-based indie label Mr. Whiggs but for some reason never materialized. The material was recorded in 1996 and like most of the Motorists’ EPs from that era, the finished product is more experimental than our full-length albums.
Indeed, this collection is about as eclectic as Dave and I ever got. The songs run the gamut from the fragile folk of “Wallace Interstate Memory” to the instrumental garage rock of “Steam Furnace Road” and the acid-damaged electronica of “Razors Don’t Reason.”
It took nearly 20 years but I’m pleased Gas Daddy Go Records is finally able to give “If Birds Were Spies” the proper cassette release it deserves. Hope you dig it!

This isn’t a record review. Or maybe it is. But I fell asleep while listening to this album and had a wonderful dream: I was riding my bike through a fictional version of the city where I was born. You know what I mean- familiar, but strangely new? I rode through predawn darkness. The sun began to rise and made the city glow. Two buildings stood out, a liquor store and a pasta factory.
